The University for development studies (UDS), was establish
in 1992 under the PNDC law 279 to blend academic work with that of community in
order to provide constructive and meaningful interactions between the two.
Blah! Blah! Blah! Is what you might be thinking by now. I read that stuff off a
book. Actually I read it of the site of the university but hey! Who cares? UDS,
as the university is popularly referred to is one of the unrecognized
universities in Ghana with four campuses scattered all over the northern
regions of Ghana (Nyankpala, Tamale, Navrongo and Wa Campuses). I say
unrecognized because the flex of every student is to talk about his or her
school being better than the next. But the thing that happens is whenever a
student of “almighty” UDS is
chatting with friends from other universities, and UDS is mentioned, the first
thing I personally always hear is “Aaah! Wa???..
FACT: Over the years the UDS-Wa Campus has attained a
certain amount of recognition due to the fact that their entertainment calendar
is always full and able. They have at least three major parties per trimesters
(yeah their academic calendar is divided into three. Deal with it.) with a well
known GH artiste attending at least one of their gatherings. Check it; they
even had two rival entertainment squads on the campus Party seekers and Black-Awt
gang. Such cool names and even cooler competitive parties. They still have a
long way to go when it comes to SRC administration. Their parties may not be
rated party of the year but they can hold their own in a conversation with
friends from other universities.
FACT: From Victimz
to Blue magic to Platynom,
Nyankpala campus, the first UDS to be established, could boast of all these
cliques. Save for Platynom who tries
their possible best to induce a bit of fun, I don’t think Nyankpala can account
for any of the previously stated cliques. There is therefore no competition,
variety or flare in the school. Being the first UDS to have been created, you
would think they would at least have run a thousand and one miles after twenty
long, lousy and tiresome years of existence.
FACT: Ahhh the land of books…Tamale campus. So engrossed are
they in their CGPAs and their books that I wonder if they know what music
sounds like. All their activities are organized by their SRC...BORING!!!!! I am
moving on from here because I honestly have nothing positive to say about
Tamale campus when it comes to entertainment. My mother always used to tell me
“If you have nothing nice to say about somebody, don’t talk at all.”
FACT: At least this next campus tries to vie with Wa campus
when it comes to entertainment. With CEO
taking over entertainment from the SRC, chilling on Navrongo campus has seen a
slow but sturdy rise. CEO pulled back
to give Platynom (Navrongo branch)
full reigns over entertainment. Personally I don’t know why they pulled back,
they were doing OK. It would have at least brought a sense of competition and
variety to the campus. Recently another clique, Money and Fame has also begun to establish themselves in the
sector. I know their name is cheesy but we go take it like that. Despite the
campus’ over religious nature and lack of participation in most of campus
activities, I still rate them second in all the four.
University is a place to discover one’s self.
Not saying it should be all about partying but hey…”All work and no play” is a
serious thing to consider. It’s about time all the UDS campuses start to put
their names on the lips of every potential tertiary newcomer. Legon and KNUST
are known mainly for their excellent academics and most importantly for their
love for life and living it to the max. UDS has brains, when are we going to
find our rhythm. Food for thought.
